Diet coke mentos videos.

there is a new craze on the internet, creating videos dedicated to experimenting with diet coke and mentos.

there is currently 4 million search results in google for this term, and in the overture and wordtracker search analysis, there are approx

500 searches for these terms every day.

in http://www.video.google.com there are 10 new videos added daily to the growing list of 280 videos submitted currently.

Additionally listed in the top 100 videos in video.google.com there is always one diet coke mentos video listed in the top Ten.

how and why this started.

Steve Splanger of stevespanglerscience.com states he has done this experiment over one thousand times on on television, talk shows, science conventions, teacher associations.

Nobody really knows how or where this started.

though 2 guys from eepybird.com have gone to a lot of trouble to create a fascinating and entertaining video using over 100 2 litre bottles of diet coke to produce a 2 minute video, from which some websites state have earned them over $15,000. This is what has most likely inspired many amateur video producers to do similar.

Since it is so inexpensive these days to produce a video and store it on the internet at places like youtube.com and video.google.com . Additionally the materials are very inexpensive.

this is a very safe experiment, great for kids to experiment with at little cost, though as seen from the many videos ive watched, they are all having a great time.

Whats needed:

1. video camera.

    Any video camera can be used, that can be connected to your computer. Handy cam, digital camera with video option. Cell phone with video option.

2.Internet connection of course.

3. Bottles of Diet Coke.

4. Packets of Mentos.

5. Website to upload your videos to , to share with the world.. video.google.com is the best.. its free and easy to use.

How to do it:

Preparation.

there are two main different styles of adding your mentos to the 2 litre bottle of diet coke.

1. form a cylinder in cardboard, put this in the top of the open diet coke bottle, use this funnel to drop 5 mentos into the bottle.

2. drill a hole in the centre of the mentos, then put some cotton through the bottom of the mentos and glue it in place. then drill holes in 4 other mentos and string the cotton through each of these, then drill a small 1/8th hole in the top of the diet coke lid, put the cotton through this hole and tie it to a small piece of wood. this results in 5 mentos hanging on the cotton underneath the diet coke lid, then screw the lid back on the bottle. The mentos are suspended above the diet coke liquid in the bottle. to proceed with the experiment, you break the cotton and the mentos drop into the diet coke liquid.

Preparing for the video.

Make sure your shoot where there is plenty of light.

Video cameras with a zoom feature make for best shooting.

Make sure there is not too much background noise, such as cars driving by, dogs barking etc.

Do a test run first without actually doing the experiment, then preview the video to see how it looks and to see if how the background looks.

Make sure you have a presentable background for your video. since you are videoing vertical sprays of diet coke, try to use a background to reflect his. e.g a background with vertical images in the background. this will help the look of your video.

I have created 5 diet coke videos to date.

one of my friends had my video camera, so we used our digital camera to shoot, my wife was taking the videos, the first two she held the camera on the side.. to get the height of the sprays, which of course resulted in the video being displayed sideways.  these can be seen here http://www.dietcokementoschallenge.com the next 2 videos we shot beside our pool with tall trees in the background, in these my 3 year old daughter participated, by breaking the cotton which holds the mentos out of the diet coke, these videos were great fun to make, you can see them here http://www.dietcokementoschallenge.com .The last diet coke video I made, was an experiement with a balloon to see what would happen, when dropping 5 mentos into a 2 litre bottle of diet coke and then putting a party balloon on top. the results were a complete failure, but still great fun.

Future Diet Coke Mentos Videos.

Rocket bike.

I will be taping 2 X 2 Litre bottles of diet coke to my daughters wiggles push bike. then breaking the cotton which suspends the mentos above the diet coke fluid to create a big spray out the back of the bottles to force the wiggles pushbike forward. this should be great fun.

Diet coke Pop Gun

I will work out a way to use the mentos and diet coke as a propellant to shoot table tennis balls from a cylinder attached to the 2 litre bottle of diet coke.

Diet coke mentos trip wire.

I will set up between one of my doorways leading into my garage, a small cotton tripwire, once stepped on by one of my soon to be non-friend friends, once stepped on , this will drop the mentos into the diet coke with will result in spraying my friend with diet coke.
